With the news this week of COVID exposures at schools in Port Alberni and Campbell River, it is a reminder of the importance of staying home when sick with symptoms, physical distancing, mask wearing, and hand sanitizing. In addition, it is important to keep our social bubbles in community small.

We are now half way through Quarter One at NISS and interims will be mailed home by Oct. 16th.  Parent/Teacher interviews will happen virtually on Oct. 20 between 5:00 and 7:00.

Numeracy and Literacy Assessments: It is mandatory that all grade 10, 11 and 12’s write the Numeracy and Literacy 10 Assessments at least once in their final years of high school. Normally, there is also a Literacy 12 assessment; however, the Literacy 12 Assessment has been cancelled this year. The 10 level assessments will be happening between Nov. 2-4 at NISS. Students needing to write these will be notified. Students can choose to rewrite up to 2 more times if they are not satisfied with their assessment grade. These assessments are graded on a 1-4 level. Teachers at NISS will be offering tutorial lessons to prepare the students for these assessments. More information and samples of what to expect are offered for students and parents at the following Ministry of Education websites:

Some parents have been asking about the Grammarly app and if students can have access to this app. This app offers suggestions on how to improve writing as students type a sentence, paragraph or essay on a computer. In looking into this, we have found the app is now offered for free when students use Google Documents for their Google Classroom. Instructions for using the app in Google Documents will be emailed to each parent.

With Thanksgiving weekend coming up, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to all the parents, students, and staff for working diligently at keeping everyone safe during the pandemic. We wish you all a safe and joyful Thanksgiving weekend.
