Dear NISS Families,

We are asking for feedback from our entire school community at North Island Secondary School for scheduling for our 2022-2023 school year.  For the past two years North Island Secondary School has operated on the Quarter System where students attend two classes each day for 10 weeks. Each class is about 2.5 – 3 hours long. They are enrolled in two courses per quarter.

We are interested in hearing your thoughts about whether we should keep this schedule or change to a different format.

We went to the Quarter System at the start of the pandemic when we returned in person schooling, when we were in cohorts and to reduce the amount of traffic and congestion in the hallways. The district continued to have both high schools in this system for this school year for continued health and safety reasons during a pandemic year.

Now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing, solid health and safety measures are in place, and vaccination rates are high, we are asking everyone in our school community which scheduling system is best for students, and for our school.

The other system that we were looking at is the Semester System.

In the Semester System, students attend four classes each day for 20 weeks. Classes are 70 minutes long, though once per week there is a 2 hour and 15 minute “long block” in the afternoon. They are enrolled in four courses per semester.

We are sending a survey out to ask for your feedback. The survey will be coming to the email address that you provided to the school. If you have not provided the school an email address, you can call the schools office to ask for a paper copy of the survey or provide the school with an email address that we can send the survey to.

The link for the survey is here:

This is an important decision for our school, and we would like all voices to be heard. Thus, we are asking for one response per family

Please call the office if you have any questions 250-956-3394.

Kindest regards,

Jen Turner Principal
